She’s got so much love to give, but she’s giving it in rations. We spoke to Cape Towns #1 Malatjie about living life in style.
Spending time with Patty Monroe is a treat. We spent the afternoon at her place and at some point, it was mad easy to believe we lived there too. How is she just so effortlessly charming and spicy? Being around her energy is easy – and it’s hard to leave without feeling extra blessed.
“When people are comfortable they are real and I fucks with that. People are like reflections. I always see myself in other people. If you find faults in other people, it gets you thinking,” says Patty of her welcoming ways.
When it comes to rationing love and energy she says, “I’m such a lover – but I’ve also grown. I used to love so much and now I don’t feel like I need to do that. I don’t need to go all out all the time. I can actually keep a little bit for myself and it’s still more than enough. I just happened to figure out that I’ve got so much fucking love!” She hasn’t become closed off, but she’s learned that protecting her energy is key – without it, you just stop functioning as a person and as an artist.
Notably, her style has developed over the years and she prides herself on being able to wear and appreciate items that most people wouldn’t ordinarily think of as beautiful. This is the same approach she takes when it comes to people and criticism. Arranging your interactions purely around the various aspects of a person that don’t appeal to you only means you’re not taking the time to see them as a whole. Speaking about her cube-inspired waistcoat she says, “This looks like a net, but I love being able to show a different side to it.”
It comes down to the way she says and does things – the charisma is strong with Patty. “I’m living in abundance. When you’re happy with what you have, you see how the universe just sorts you out,” explains Patty. She might want a new pair of shoes here and there, but she’s aware that she has plenty – that theme carries through in all other aspects of her life. Abundance is a state of mind.
