A performance featuring stories from his journey as an artist
“The journey of music for me started at a very young age. I’ve always been surrounded by music” explains Langa Mavuso during his performance on Red Bull Music presents Beyond the Sound, a series showcasing some of South Africa’s most exciting artists on stage right now. Soulful and row, his set included his 2017 single ‘Home’, ‘Vivid Dreams’ from his debut EP ‘Liminal Sketches’, old favourite ‘City Lights’ as well as ‘Sunday Blues’.
“I always say that the melody comes from something greater than myself but the words are my own. Once there’s a melody and there’s lyrics to it, it’s just a process of seeing what do I need to add instrumentally and once we add it instrumentally maybe we record it. Once we’ve recorded it then I’ll take it back to my band and we start to play with it and the shows are really us having a huge jam session with one another.” Langa explains of his songwriting process.
"Instead of wandering off into daydreams I wander off into songs. I could be making bread and start singing about the bread."
Langa goes on to describe music as an escape of sorts. “Instead of wandering off into daydreams I wander off into songs. I could be making bread and start singing about the bread. I never realized this. I’ve heard my parents complain about it, I’ve heard my friends complain about it”, he muses.
Talking about the story behind ‘Sunday Blues’ he says it was about a lover who wasn’t present in the moment with him. “I was still at UCT and I kind of felt like the person I was with wasn’t present in any of the moments that we shared. And it was kind of me pleading with them, saying would you be here. Just like your body is. I’m just asking you to come into this space with me and be present with me whether things are good or bad.”
"I want to make music for a long time and see other people create music for themselves as well through opportunities and platforms that I create."
While he struggles to answer questions about his future he does know he wants to create music for as long as possible and also enable others to create. “I want to make music for a long time and see other people create music for themselves as well through opportunities and platforms that I create.”
