I see so many people hating on last year. Let me begin by saying: it's easy to fall into that trap. If you were ever even near someone on Twitter you'd know that the prevailing mindset was that 2016 sucked. It did. For the most part. But then so did 2015, 2014, 2013... It's all relative! I can't say that it sucked. Nope. I had a damn good year! I'm not saying I was flying high for 12 months, but I definitely came out of 2016 a much better man than I went in. I wanted to recap what happened in the year that I thought was rad so here's a recap... postcards from yesteryear.
The anniversary of this website! Oh, man. It's been a year. My second January in Cape Town... Wrapped up the #latenightportrait series with this shot of Kaylin and spent the night running around under the festive lights of the city. I got to shoot the Mumford & Sons: Gentlemen of the Road show in Cape Town. It was a nice start to the year!
February kicked off with the CTEMF lectures at Red Bull Studios. Sleep? What's that. Goldie called me Rick Rubin. Shot a campaign for It Came From The Jungle with Aidan Tobias. Went home for the first time in a long time. Hung out with Habstrakt. A lot of days were spent on the road, in cars, squashed in between luggage and sleeping on my own bags.
I quite enjoyed spending time exploring Cape Town this year which meant that I found myself in some quite isolated and beautiful places. Of Monster & Men played at Kirstenbosch Gardens.
May started with me hanging out in a burnt out building with Danielle. Hung out with Kid X at Red Bull Studios. There was a moment in Long Street that stands out for me - a dude hit someone and shattered all the windows in his car - there were people everywhere and the atmosphere was so intense... It just stood out for that reason. It was like everything was playing out in slow motion.
Oh baby, we're half way now! There were too many highlights. Shooting the stills for the Militia x Red Bull Studios Sessions. Shooting the "Sleep is for the Rich" music video with Youngsta and Stilo Magolide. Actually so much went down that I forgot to write in my diary even once!
I took this photo of Jake in a parking lot. Somewhere.
Oppikoppi marked the start of festival season and the return of Little Simz. Did a rad thing with Danielle for Gucci - yes, the real Gucci. Also almost managed to get mugged while exploring Cape Town one night. Had the opportunity to shoot the Red Bull King of the Rock final in Johannesburg.
I can't even remember how hectic Rocking The Daisies was because I ran my ass off - I'm not sure that I have been that sweaty before. I went to Austria. To see a girl. That girl(friend) in the photo, yes. Best time. Best!
Francois van Coke hosted a preview for his "Hierdie is Lewe" album at Red Bull Studios. Uno July recrorded, mixed, mastered and created a music video in his #UnoJuly24Hours project. The Rudimentals played for 5Live (that was the tightest it's ever been in studio). The Raptor Room opened in Roeland Street! It's so good *crying* the food is amazing, the floats are amazing... It's all good! I flew to Johannesburg for a few hours to shoot the Butan 15 Years celebration. Shot UB40 at Grand West. There was even a Jameson Pulp Fiction party.
December was a selfish month. I spent all of my time with my girlfriend. Exploring Cape Town and the surrounds; fresh freckles and peeling skin as a reward for our time spent under the sun. The coast saw more of me than my own bed. I have no complaints!
